Join us on Saturday, February 25 at 10:15 in the Children’s Room to explore the life of the polar bear, Ursus maritimus, or the sea bear. Polar bears have remarkable adaptations that help them survive in the Arctic, one of the harshest environments on the planet. Hear what it is like to work with the bears and what experts have to say about the challenges polar bears are facing in the ever changing Arctic. You can also check out a stuffed polar bear at the Children’s Desk to take on your outdoor adventures. Polar bear stories will be featured at our storytimes the last week of February to celebrate International Polar Bear Day.

Bozeman has a plethora of talented professional musicians, music teachers, and college students in the exceptional music programs at MSU. But perhaps the ones who shine the brightest are the young musicians still in high school. The Foundation is proud to welcome teenage performers from Basement Jazz for the February Exploring the Arts program on Monday, February 27, 7pm in the Large Community Room. Jazz band members include Amy Giullian on drums, Caroline Janssen on guitar, Colleen Schmidt rocking the bass, and Claire Young on tenor saxophone. In addition to being accomplished musicians, these five girls will be playing their original compositions According to the band’s Facebook page, the girls met at Camp Epic in 2010. Since that time, they’ve played gigs around town, including the annual Jazz Montana dinner, the Women’s Expo, the Christmas Stroll, Bobcat basketball games, Sola Café, and at weddings and private parties. In addition, the jazz band opened for the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet at last summer’s Big Sky Classical Music Festival, where the Bozeman Daily Chronicle said, “Bozeman-based band Basement Jazz brought down the house.” For more information about the program, please contact Paula at 582-2426.

"When I work with paint, I feel I am composing a poem," said Kirsten Kainz about her Montana landscapes. Kainz will be showing her large acrylics and oils in the Atrium Gallery March through April 2012. With titles of "Rain Day" and "Wispy Drifters," the paintings will be sure to delight. A portion of all sales directly benefits the Library. An Art Opening Reception is open to the public on Friday, March 2, 5:30-7pm with free drinks and appetizers hosted by the Library Foundation.
